Winter’s frosty temperatures offer those who venture out, the fun of skating on Lake Menomin. This year, in between skating and an occasional snowball fight, outdoor enthusiasts were able to make use of new tables and benches.

Thanks to the combined efforts of the two Menomonie Rotary Clubs and the City of Menomonie, 12 picnic tables and 5 benches were constructed and placed at Menomonie’s Wolske Bay Park. The new outdoor furniture provided places for families and friends to gather, sit to lace up skates or relax for a few minutes. The new additions were completed in time to benefit the many Menomonie folks who came to see the annual holiday light display.

Back in 2019, members of the Menomonie Rotary Clubs stained and assembled some 10 new picnic tables and donated them to the City for use at Wilson Park. Then In 2025, Rotarians again saw a need and worked together to fund and replace deteriorating picnic tables and benches at Wolske Bay Park.

Working With Dave Schofield, director of Public Works, dedicated volunteers from the Rotary Club of Menomonie and the Sunrise Rotary Club spent three weekends in the fall of 2025 gathering materials, staining table tops and assembling the tables and benches.

Cedar Falls Building Systems, Inc. generously donated the space for the storage of materials and the assembly. Northern Cross Arm Co., Inc., Chippewa Falls offered a deep discount on lumber and GLP Services, Eau Claire, donated the plaques that were placed on each table and bench to acknowledge Rotary’s contributions. City staff, under the direction of David Frank, then transported the tables to the park in time for winter use.

Mayor Randy Knaack, expressed his excitement for Rotary’s donation and thanked the clubs “for their contribution of funds and labor to improve the experience of visitors to our parks during the winter and all summer long.”

The two Rotary Clubs are part of Rotary International, a world-wide service organization supporting a network of more than 45,000 clubs, consisting of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite to create lasting change. For more than 110 years, Rotarians have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects, from literacy and peace to water and health.

Care Companion Robot ‘ElliQ’ Discussed at Effordability Summit

Dunn County ADRC staff share participants’ experiences so far with project

By MNN Staff

Mary Linberg and Tracy Fischer of Dunn County ADRC (Aging & Disability Resource Center) presented at the recent Effordability Summit held at UW-Stout on Tuesday, April 6-7. The title of their presentation was “Using Artificial Intelligence to Alleviate Social Isolation and Loneliness.”

"At the ADRC of Dunn County, we have been incredibly grateful for the opportunity to partner with Common Good Philanthropies and Intuition Robotics to bring ElliQ to older adults across Wisconsin” said Tracy Fischer, ADRC Manager. “This work has been both exciting and insightful, as we continue to learn from participants and see the impact firsthand.”

Fischer added, “initial data shows ElliQ is helping to reduce social isolation and loneliness, while also supporting broader health and wellness goals. It has been rewarding to be part of an effort that is truly improving daily life for so many older adults.”

Read more about ElliQ from a previous story published in Menomonie News Net, March 2025, ‘Free Robot Available to Dunn County Older Adults’

“The robot, ElliQ, is powered by artificial intelligence and is in thousands of older adults’ homes across the nation, Fischer said. It was created to support older adults through daily check-ins, wellness guidance, social engagement and access to services. ElliQ, created by Intuition Robotics, can engage older adults in meaningful conversations, offer reminders for medications and appointments, suggest wellness activities, and provide companionship through interactive dialogue. Unlike other smart technologies that react to commands, ElliQ initiates interactions and builds personalized context to enhance engagement.” Click HERE for the full MNN story.

In addition here’s the link to a recent (April 6) feature on ElliQ by WEAU TV Channel 13: Small robot helps Chippewa Valley seniors beat loneliness, state leads nation in results

According to Mary Linberg, ElliQ case worker, there are still opportunities for older adults in Dunn County and Wisconsin to try out ElliQ without cost or obligation. Contact her at [email protected] or 715-231-2727 to learn more.

MHS Grads - Jason (Jay) Fahl

Jay Fahl - Class of 2003

By Judy Foust

Dear Readers,

I enjoy writing these stories as much as I hope you enjoy reading them. Whether I’m writing about former students or Menomonie grads I knew nothing about before, I find the variety of life experiences that all began in Menomonie to be fascinating. This week’s story is from my former student Jay Fahl.

My first question to Jay was regarding his strongest memories and highlights of time at MHS. He replied that what stood out most were “all the memories made, relationships established, and accomplishments achieved from participating in football, tennis, choirs, and musicals.” I asked him to elaborate.

Jay started with his sports experiences in football and tennis. He fondly recalls the time he spent with teammates playing football games under the “Friday night lights” and the spring weekends traveling to and playing in tennis tournaments. Jay’s other passion in high school was music. He especially enjoyed the late nights spent rehearsing musicals with the rest of the cast. “I credit these experiences with cultivating my continued preference for working closely with a small, trusted circle of people to achieve meaningful goals.”

When Jay reminisced about his academic experiences, he credited Craig Olson’s Economics class for inspiring his educational and career path, Craig Aamot’s choir instruction and direction for fueling a lifelong pursuit of music-making, and my class for our activities and group projects that Jay described as “challenging and fun.”

High school photo

After high school, Jay attended UW-River Falls, graduating in 2006 with degrees in Economics and Political Science. Since then, he has spent all nineteen years of his career in finance—16 with U.S. Bank and currently serving as its VP Portfolio Credit Risk Manager out of the Minneapolis headquarters.

In addition, Jay is a certified group exercise instructor and has taught classes for eight years.

Jay and wife Lindsay are avid world travelers who love to explore new places. When Jay wrote that they had visited 26 countries, I asked him to name some of his favorites - New Zealand, Australia, Nepal, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Norway and Sweden. World travelers for sure!

Jay is also co-founder and President of a 45-man a cappella chorus - The Journeyman Chorus - that draws members from and performs across the Upper Midwest. The group is in its sixth season. I asked if he might be bringing his group to the Mabel Tainter in the future? He replied that while there’s no plan in the works for Menomonie, the group is planning a future performance at the Heyde Center in Chippewa Falls. Last fall they performed at a Collegiate Festival in Eau Claire and they will be doing a concert in Burnsville, MN, during the first weekend in May.

Currently Jay, Lindsay, and five-year-old daughter Finna live just west of River Falls. They are active in their church in Woodbury where he has led a small group Bible study for several years. Jay’s other interests include weightlifting, golfing, ice fishing, supporting his daughter’s activities, and taking advantage of any excuse for firing up the smoker and cooking outside.

Current photo

Jay added that he and his family have stayed very close friends with MHS classmates Bethany (Selvig) and Josh Risler. The two families enjoy spending time together and travel together along with the Rislers’ two teen-aged sons.

Thank you, Jay, for sharing your story with us this week. We love to know what “our kids” are doing with their lives!

Compiled from MHS Daily Announcements

Wednesday, April 8

Congratulations to the Boys Tennis Team for winning the Mustang Invite yesterday. The team started with a 7-0 sweep of Superior, followed by another 7-0 sweep against Baldwin-Woodville, and finished the day with a 6-1 win over Onalaska.

In a hard-fought battle the JV2 Baseball Team showed grit and poise to defeat Durand-Arkansas 10-7. It was a total team effort that allowed them to jump out to a 1-0 start for the season. JV Baseball kept the streak alive with a commanding 12-2 victory over Wausau West. Zach Bird provided a stellar outing on the rubber, while the bats erupted early. The lineup featured a barrage of hits and extra-base knocks from top to bottom, leaving little room for a comeback. The Varsity Baseball squad put on a clinic last night, defeating Wausau West 11-3. Max Erickson set the tone on the mound, earning the win with four dominant, no-hit innings. The offense was equally relentless, spearheaded by Luke Bystol, who went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, and Oliver Lugo, who turned heads with two hits and three stolen bases.

Girls Softball played Memorial last night coming away with big wins at both the JV and Varsity levels. Varsity won 15-2 and were led by a great pitching performance from Presley Verdon. At the plate, Ady Micek and Elsa Elliott tallied 2 hits a piece. JV won 24-4 with a strong pitching performance by Breely Fuhrman and strong team defense. Breely Fuhrman and Kenna Marsolek both hit in the park home runs in the win.

Thursday, April 9

The Varsity Golf Team had their first meet of the season Wednesday at Troy Burne Golf in Hudson. 20 teams and 120 golfers competed from Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Mustangs had a good showing on a very windy day tying for 10th place with a team score of 321 (only 3 shots out of 7th place). Leading the way were Tyler Reckin with a 4 over 75, good for 7th place, Trent Wold with an 80 good for 32nd place, followed by Wes Miller & Quin Rabenick both shooting 83, Isaac Rynes 86 & Isaac Anderson 87. Our goal was a top 10 finish and this was the highest finish for the Mustangs in this tough opening invite in several years.

Congratulations to the Girls Track and Field Team for winning the Dunn County Invite here on Tuesday night. Event winners included Lauren Ohman in the 800 meter, Evelyn Doyle in the high jump, Grace Nevin in the pole vault, Bri Klimek in the shot put, and Mari Ramirez in the long jump.

Congratulations to Darla Woodford who competed on Tuesday at the FCCLA State Leadership Conference at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. Monday evening Darla took a Culinary Baking Qualification Exam to secure her placement in the competition for Tuesday. She qualified, earning her the ability to continue to the baking competition. Darla was scored on safety & sanitation, product production, presentation and tasting for the following items: Quick bread, Choux Pastry, Cookie, and Cake Decorating. Darla scored a Silver which qualifies her to compete at the National FCCLA Conference in Washington, DC in July!

Monday, April 13

JV2 Baseball had a game last Thursday where they fell to Chippewa Falls. JV Baseball defeated Marshfield 9-7. Maxel Keyes hit his first High School home run to lead the Mustangs offense. Mavrick Scribner picked up the win on the mound. Varsity Baseball beat a Marshfield team 5-1 behind a great outing from Bailey Casey and Cade Lamb on the mound. The pitching staff had zero earned runs on the day. Charlie Mikesell and Taylor Mars led the offensive attack each with 2 hits.

Please congratulate our HOSA (Home Economics Related Occupations) State competitors: Evelyn Doyle, Sophia McNally, Mya Romsos, Izzie Remondino, Taylor Hoff and Maggie Winsand. And congratulations to Taylor Hoff and Maggie Winsand for placing 5th in the state in their competition event, Community Awareness.

The Boys Tennis Team went 3-1 this weekend at a very competitive Milwaukee Area 16 team tournament. The Mustangs defeated Big Foot 7-0, Whitnall 5-2, and Muskego 4-3, but lost a close match to Waukesha South 3-4. The team is now 7-1 overall and off to a great start to the season.

Congratulations to the Boys Track Team for their outstanding performance at the BRC True Team Invite on Friday. The boys finished third of six teams. Top performers were 3rd place finishes from Evan Olson in the 1600m and 800m and a 3rd place finish from the 4x200m relay team of Landon Vang, John Gruber, Kenny Heim and Rylan Holmstadt. 2nd place finishers were Owen Pelzel in the 1600m and Javan Butler in the long jump. Special congratulations to Javan for breaking the freshmen school record in the 100m and the long jump.

JV Baseball defeated Wausau East 19-3 on Friday. Gavin Mittlestadt threw a complete game while collecting two hits. Max Keyes and Gavin Watkins also collected 2 hits on the day as well to pace the Mustangs offense. Varsity Baseball defeated Wausau East 7-4 on Friday. Max Jaeger threw 5 innings and got the win. Cade Lamb threw 2 innings and recorded the save. Taylor Mars, Landon Mittlestadt, Kellent Turner and Charlie Mikesell all recorded 2 hits to pace the Mustang offense. JV Baseball defeated Altoona 7-2 on Saturday. Max Davis went 6 innings only allowing 2 runs, while Garrett Witt closed the game while striking out 2 of 3 hitters. Reece Birt, Tyler Sutherland, and Eric Zydowsky all collected extra base hits for the Mustang offense. Varsity Baseball defeated Altoona 10-4 on Saturday. Luke Bystol threw 4 innings while striking out 7, and Charlie Mikesell came in and recorded the win and striking out 5. Andrew Hoff and Luke Bystol each recorded 3 hits and had at least 2 RBIs. All Mustang Baseball teams are back in action Tuesday against River Falls.

Tuesday, April 14

Congratulations to the Girls Track and Field Team for their great performances on Friday in Hudson at the BRC True Team Invite. The girls finished third overall, with individual champions including Bennett Schmitt in the 1600, Bella Drake in the 3200, Bri Klimek in the shot put, and Isabel Sorensen in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and triple jump. Great job ladies and good luck at your home meet on Thursday!

New Era for Mustangs Begins

Mitch Olson to Take Over Menomonie Football Program

MENOMONIE - The School District of the Menomonie Area has named Mitch Olson as the next head football coach at Menomonie High School, the district announced April 14.

Olson brings more than a decade of experience as a teacher and multi-sport coach. He most recently served as head football coach at La Crosse Central High School, where he spent the past five seasons leading the RiverHawks.

During his tenure, Olson guided Central to Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) championships in each of the last three seasons and advanced to the WIAA playoffs all five season. He earned MVC Coach of the Year honors in 2023 and 2025. Olson earned a 32-20 overall record at Central. In addition, Olson was selected to coach in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Game in 2026 where he will serve as an assistant coach on the North large team.

Before his time in La Crosse, Olson spent 11 years teaching physical education while coaching football, baseball and working in strength and conditioning programs.

A 2009 graduate of Chippewa Falls High School, Olson earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from UW-Eau Claire in 2015. He later completed a master’s degree in education at Viterbo University in 2020.

Olson replaces Mike Sinz, who stepped down after five seasons leading the Mustangs. Sinz has accepted the head coaching position at Eau Claire North High School.

Sam (Hoyt) Clayton to Lead Blue Devil Women's Basketball Program

By UW-Stout Sports Information

MENOMONIE – UW-Stout Director of Athletics Erin Sullivan announced Wednesday, April 8, the hiring of Sam Clayton as the new head coach of the Blue Devil women’s basketball program.

Clayton becomes the 10th head coach in program history and brings a strong track record of success at the NCAA Division II level. She arrives in Menomonie after eight seasons as head coach at Michigan Tech (2018–26), where she compiled a 138-88 overall record and led the Huskies to two NCAA Tournament appearances.

A native of Arkansaw, Wis., Clayton is a graduate of Durand High School, where she earned first-team all-state honors and conference MVP while leading the Panthers to a state runner-up finish in 2009.

“We are extremely excited to add Sam Clayton to our Blue Devil family,” Sullivan said. “In Sam, we have found a leader whose vision, grit and integrity align directly with UW-Stout Athletics and our women’s basketball program.”

Under Clayton’s leadership, Michigan Tech consistently competed at a high level in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the women’s basketball program at UW-Stout,” Clayton said. “This position means a great deal to me, not only because of the tradition and potential of the team, but also because it brings me closer to home.”

Clayton’s tenure at Michigan Tech included several standout seasons. In 2022-23, the Huskies posted a 25-7 record, finished second in the GLIAC and advanced to the conference tournament championship game before earning a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional.

During the shortened 2020-21 season, Clayton guided the Huskies to a 20-2 record and a 19-game winning streak, matching a school record. Michigan Tech captured the GLIAC tournament title, and Clayton was named conference coach of the year.

Prior to returning to Michigan Tech, Clayton served as an assistant coach at the University of Sioux Falls and Youngstown State University, where she helped lead the Penguins to a 21-13 record and a WBI semifinal appearance during the 2015-16 season.

“I’m excited to get to work with our student-athletes, build meaningful relationships and compete at a high level,” Clayton said.

As a player at Michigan Tech, Clayton scored 1,434 career points and ranks seventh in program history. She helped lead the Huskies to a 103-22 record and a trip to the 2010-11 NCAA Division II national championship game. Clayton earned All-GLIAC first-team honors and multiple academic awards during her career.

Clayton was a decorated multi-sport prep athlete at Durand High School, where in girls basketball she was named first team all-state, Northwest Wisconsin player of the year and was twice selected as Middle Border Conference most valuable player. Clayton also played softball and volleyball at Durand.  Clayton returns to the Menomonie area with her husband, Cameron, and their children, Colt, Ada, and Lanie.
